3 Things You Can Do to Make Everyday Life Easier for People with Disability

28 March 2023

There are various challenges that people who have disabilities may encounter every day. For many, living a “regular life” is already difficult. They may struggle to get through the workplace, interact with friends and family, and live happily. Fortunately, you can do many things to improve their quality of life. In this blog post, we’ll go through 5 ways in which you can make everyday life easier for people with disability.

Don’t Assume That Persons with Disabilities Are Sad and Miserable

People with disabilities can experience happiness, sadness, and everything in between, just like everyone else. It’s easy to assume without knowing them personally that people with disabilities will always be unhappy, so please do not make this assumption! Even if a person has a disability, many other aspects of themselves go beyond their condition. Someone can have a great sense of humour despite suffering from a spinal cord injury or another form of disability; you just have to find out about it! People with disability experience joy and sorrow the same way as everyone else. Instead of constantly approaching these people to ask if they need help, just like a good friend would occasionally offer assistance on a “voluntary” basis.

Be Inclusive of Those with Disabilities as You Would Be of Anyone Else

Some people tend to avoid interacting with people with disabilities out of fear of appearing intrusive, rude, or insensitive or because they just don’t know enough about the situation. This mindset needs to be changed. You must treat anyone with a disability, like a friend or a co-worker and strive to make them feel included. Typically, social isolation is a problem for people with disabilities. They might not be able to attend business lunches or dinners, participate in company discussions, or even start a conversation at a gathering. When interacting with people with disabilities, you can say hello to them and learn more about their lives rather than feel sorry for them. This will make them feel warm and less alone in society.

This can extend beyond the workplace because there is often an unwritten rule that it is acceptable to stop interacting with someone once you learn they have a disability. This mindset needs to change if we want everyone always to feel included.

Be an Advocate for Real Change for People with Disabilities

Advocating for significant change is the best approach to have an impact on the disabled community. This can involve giving up your time or resources, but it can also mean making modest adjustments at work. For instance, discuss with HR the possibility of developing new rules to accommodate a person who needs more flexible hours according to a disability. Please hold your disabled friends and family members near if you have any. Keep in mind the struggles you face when you feel isolated. When they require a sympathetic ear, be there for them, and assist them in achieving their goals in life.
